Warhounds Mods and Steam Workshop Support: Current Status
Find original Warhounds modding guides, author-stated version limits, backup notes, current availability checks, and official Workshop/tool status.
Quick Answer
Warhounds still does not advertise official Steam Workshop support, and no shipped first-party SDK, editor, or mod loader was found in the official store/news set checked on September 15, 2026. The official roadmap does say that modding tools are planned around the game’s first anniversary, but that is a future plan, not a released toolchain.
For community modding, the current English Warhounds Steam Community Guides hub exposes two modding-specific author resources: “Basic Guide on the Editing JSON (Config) Files and MDB Savegame Files” by 5m1tty and “MOD TACTICAL WARHOUNDS” by AG!!!. Their original Steam pages are linked below.
Both original guide pages were still directly accessible in an unlogged Chrome check on September 15. Their HTML contains generic bannedNotification and incompatibleNotification elements, but those elements were hidden in browser rendering (display: none with no client rectangles). This review therefore does not treat those hidden template messages as current removal or incompatibility warnings. Page availability still does not prove that either modification works on the current retail build.
Official support versus community resources
| What players are looking for | Status checked September 15, 2026 | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Official Steam Workshop | Not advertised / not confirmed live | Warhounds’ current Steam store feature list shows Single-player, Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, and Family Sharing, but not Steam Workshop. |
| Official SDK / editor / mod loader | No shipped release found | The official news index checked through September 15 contains no release announcement for a first-party SDK, editor, or mod loader. |
| Official future modding tools | Planned, not released | The August 27 roadmap says modding tools are planned around the first anniversary and warns that plans and dates may change. |
| Community JSON / save editing | Author guide accessible | 5m1tty’s original guide was accessible on September 15. It documents JSON/config and MDB/save editing but states no target Warhounds version; current-build compatibility was not independently tested. |
| Community cosmetic replacement | Author mod guide accessible | AG!!!’s original guide was accessible on September 15 and labels mod v0.9 as based on Warhounds 1.0.0; current-build compatibility was not independently tested. |
The Steam Guides interface also uses “Workshop” as a guide category/tag for one current entry. That category label is not the same thing as Warhounds having a live Steam Workshop feature.
Community resources and their current boundaries
| Resource | Original author / original page | What it is for | Author-stated version and update time | Verification in this review | Uninstall / recovery guidance provided? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Guide on the Editing JSON (Config) Files and MDB Savegame Files | 5m1tty — original Steam Community guide | Reference for editing Warhounds JSON/config files and MDB save data. | No Warhounds game version is stated. Posted August 14, 2026; last updated August 14, 2026. | Original page accessible September 15. Hidden Steam notification nodes were present in HTML but not visible in Chrome. This review did not edit a retail install/save or independently verify current-build compatibility. | Partial. The author says to back up the original file before editing. No complete uninstall / full-restore procedure is documented. |
| MOD TACTICAL WARHOUNDS | AG!!! — original Steam Community guide | Cosmetic replacement focused on the appearance of unique mercenaries. | Mod v0.9, based on Warhounds 1.0.0. Posted August 20, 2026; last updated August 21, 2026. An August 27 author comment expected the appearance-only mod to survive an update, but did not state a newly tested build. | Original page accessible September 15. Hidden Steam notification nodes were present in HTML but not visible in Chrome. This review did not download its external package or independently verify current-build compatibility. | Partial. The author tells readers to back up the original ClothingConfig folder. No explicit uninstall procedure is provided. |
Those are the two specific modding resources that could be tied back to the current Warhounds Steam Community entry and an original author page in this review. This page does not mirror either resource, link directly to AG!!!’s external package, or turn author instructions into a Warhounds.org installation guide.
Which resource fits your goal?
If you want to understand what community members discovered in structured game files or saves, use 5m1tty’s original guide as a research reference. It covers config and save editing, but it does not state a Warhounds version, and this review has not independently verified those edits against the current retail build.
If you want the provenance for the cosmetic TACTICAL WARHOUNDS project, use AG!!!’s original Steam guide. The author explicitly labels v0.9 as based on Warhounds 1.0.0, which is a useful compatibility boundary; the later comment is an expectation, not a clean-build compatibility test.
If what you actually want is a trainer or process-memory tool rather than file replacement, see the trainer and cheats guide. If you are considering MDB or other save-state changes, first use the save file location and backup guide so you know what needs protecting before experimentation.
Compatibility boundary after later patches
Both community resources predate the September 7 Patch #2 update. The basic editing guide gives no game-version target at all. TACTICAL WARHOUNDS gives a concrete starting point — Warhounds 1.0.0 — but the author’s later statement that an update should not cause problems is not the same as a documented test against Patch #2 or another named build.
This review therefore did not promote the authors’ file paths, field names, values, replacement steps, or save-edit instructions into Warhounds.org reference instructions. No unknown package was downloaded or executed, and no game file or save was modified. Current compatibility remains an author-specific claim until it is reproduced on a named retail build.
What would count as official mod support?
The official-support status should change only after a first-party shipping signal, for example:
- the Warhounds Steam store advertises Steam Workshop or links a live Workshop for App ID 3929470;
- the developer publishes a downloadable SDK, editor, supported mod loader, or equivalent official tool;
- first-party documentation defines how supported mods are packaged, loaded, versioned, and removed.
The January developer reply that modding would “probably” come after release remains historical context. The August roadmap is stronger because it explicitly plans modding tools, but neither source says those tools are available now.
